If you are new to Canada, want to improve your spoken or written English, and prepare yourself for further study, SCAS offers a variety of ESL courses to help you. Based on an assessment done at Orientation/Registration, you will be placed in a program that comfortably meets your language needs and helps you to feel more confident using English.
Please note that recommendation for a Package is based on your language assessment.
ESLAO is a beginner’s course to help you increase your skill in speaking, writing, and reading English. You will learn basic conversation skills, add to your English vocabulary and learn to write simple sentences.
ADA1O is part of the beginner’s package. This drama course will familiarize you with real-life Canadian speaking situations. You will write dialogues about day-to-day experiences and use role play to practice your pronunciation in a variety of creative ways. You will gain confidence in speaking in front of and with others in a variety of situations.
In ESLBO you will expand your English communication skills and cultural knowledge in this course. You will practice pronunciation, expand your vocabulary and develop reading strategies. You will also write using more complex sentence patterns.
CGC1P is Canadian Geography. In this course, you will develop your English speaking, reading, writing and listening skills as you study geography.
In ESLCO you will improve your accuracy and sophistication in English. Speaking, listening, reading and writing daily, you will learn to prepare and give short oral presentations, take notes, write summaries, and develop longer pieces of writing. More complex patterns of sentence writing and further grammar study are also part of the study.
In ELS2O, you will improve your grammar and paragraph writing skills by using the writing process. You will learn to recognize and correct errors in your work. You will build your language skills with extensive vocabulary study; By working in structured writing groups, you will gain skill and confidence in speaking English.
In ESLDO you will practice using English with increased accuracy and confidence in classroom and social situations. Reading, writing (using the writing process), listening and speaking will prepare you for the demands of other subject areas. Also, you will learn basic research skills and how to present your findings.
EPS3O will offer you the opportunity to practice and fine-tune your English speaking skills. You will learn how to speak in a variety of situations, ranging from informal to formal. You will develop your vocabulary and improve your pronunciation as you write scripts, and work on oral exercises. This course will increase your confidence and fluency in speaking English.
In this senior ESL class, you will fine-tune your English skills so that your understanding, speaking, reading, and writing are reaching English fluency. You will study, analyze and respond to longer readings; develop essays by means of process writing; and prepare and make presentations on a variety of academic and social issues.
